“ Meditation and water are wedded forever.”
– Herman Melville, Moby Dick

The water… that’s the attraction. The canal St. Martin works its way northward along the eastern edge of the 10th arrondisement, drawing land dwellers from all around. Water-gazers line the banks…strolling, sitting, discussing…imagining. At rue Lancry, the road crossing the canal is deceptively different from most other ordinary streets. If you happen to be there at the right time, you can witness Parisian patience as the arm of the level crossing signal comes down in fits and starts, and the rotation of the road slowly opens up the canal for the occasional boat to pass. The huge wooden gates of the locks – leaking, yet formidable – stand in spite of age and weather. A climb up the pedestrian crossing affords a bird’s eye view of the boats moving upstream through Locks of the Récollettes.
